The Buffalo Trace Children’s Advocacy Center, Inc. is a child-focused, community-based program in which law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, medical and mental health professionals come together to provide services for the child victim of abuse, non-offending family members and caretakers.

It is the mission of the Center to minimize any additional trauma to the child victim of abuse by coordinating these important services at a child-friendly Center where the needs of the child will remain a priority. This coordination will result in the child telling their story of abuse one time instead of the current practice of multiple times at multiple places.

The NSDAR, founded in 1890, is a service organization dedicated to service to the Nation. Its objectives are Historic Preservation, Promotion of Education and Patriotic Endeavor. An applicant for membership must be no less than 18 years of age. She shall prove lineal bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. Hospice of Hope is a non-profit, community-based organization serving terminally ill children, adults and their families in Northern Kentucky and Southern Ohio. Hospice is a philosophy of palliative care focusing on comfort and symptom management. A holistic treatment approach provided by a team of professionals addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the terminal disease process. Hospice seeks neither to neither hasten nor postpone death, but to facilitate the alternative of dying at home or in a home-like setting. Bereavement services are available after the death of a loved one. Community grief counseling is also available for both individuals and groups in the workplace or school setting.

The Knights of Columbus of Maysville was formed in 1910. Today it continues to strive to increase its own record for charitable contributions and volunteer service to St. Patrick’s Church School, and other community endeavors. Lewisburg-Millcreek Lions Club was charted in April 1966. The Club’s main function is to serve. By helping the local residents purchase new eye glasses, support the Eye Foundation and Diabetes Foundation through the Lions International and are supported by fundraisers. The main fundraiser is the annual horse show. Other fundraisers are: girls basketball tournament, and the fun horse show.

Community services include: opening the gym for those who would like to walk a few laps and renting the gym to groups of basketball players. The gym and grounds are available to churches for their functions and shelter for severe weather conditions.

Our Lioness Club helps Maysville Lion’s Club with their annual radio auction in the spring, pancake breakfasts and conduct eye screenings at St. Patrick, Straub, Jones and Middle schools (grades 1,3,5 & 7). Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Lions Clubhouse. New members are also welcome or by invitation. The club supports state, national and international Lion’s Clubs. They make donations to local food banks; Project Prom and Graduation at St. Patrick’s and Mason County Schools, Hospice of Hope and collect used glasses. The Ohio River Valley Artists Guild was established in 1998 to encourage, promote and develop the visual arts throughout the region with educational and peer group activities. The Guild’s programs are open to all.

A variety of skill based workshops and classes presented on a regular basis include drawing, painting (oil, watercolor, and acrylics), textiles, paper-mache, silk painting, pastels, pottery, and ceramics. School programs consist of art demonstrations for grade and middle schools, life drawing classes for high school students, and a “Kids Summer Camp” which provides hands on participation.

Community exhibitions of regional and local artwork and the state wide Kentucky Art Education Association student competition are sponsored each year. The “Art Smart” lecture series brings a variety of artists, curators, and educators to the community for Sunday afternoon lectures.

The Guild is a non-profit organization supported by the Kentucky Arts Council, the Hayswood Foundation, and local members and businesses. The Guild serves citizens in the Buffalo Trace area of Kentucky as well as Adams and Brown counties in Ohio. Continued support allows the development of programs that enrich the community, the family and individuals.

The Tri-County Shrine Club is chartered by Oleika Shrine Temple in Lexington, Kentucky. The club supports the work of 19 orthopedic hospitals for children with problems of the bones, joints and muscles. They also help support three Burns Institutes that treat children who have been seriously burned or children needing reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation as a result of burn injuries. During 1999, gifts from people in the community helped friends, neighbors and co-workers. The recipients were residents of both Kentucky and Ohio, from counties including Mason, Fleming, Bracken, Lewis and Robertson in Kentucky and Adams and Brown in Ohio.

Over 4000 local children and teens participated in programs partially funded by this United Way campaign. These programs were administered by member agencies including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Limestone Family YMCA, the Tom Browning Boys & Girls Club, Camp Discovery, the Mason County Family Resource Center, and the Ida Ross Youth Center.

Training and support programs were also provided to over 3000 people by member agencies including the Women’s Crisis Center, America Reads, the Mason County Adult Education and Literacy Program, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), and Hospice of Hope.

The Washington Lion’s Club is a service group committed to helping the less fortunate. They support the goals of Lions International, which includes the prevention of blindness and diabetes. The Washington Lion’s Club has also financed many improvements at the Maysville/Mason County Recreation Park and beautification projects for Washington. The club purchases eyeglasses for anyone who cannot afford them, provides clothing to needy families and finances numerous other charitable causes.
